I like a French baguette, sourdough, French loaf, and artisan bread, but even gluten-free would work. For more than 6-8 people, you might need a 13×9 inches dish.īread– Any bread will do. To make this beautiful overnight breakfast casserole, you will need:īaking dish– for 4-6 people, you might need an 8x8x2 inches baking dish. This dish is perfect for Christmas, Easter, any brunch that involves guests, or anytime you have people out of town visiting your house. However, if you make it with sour cream, the texture will be a little bit different, just more “egg-ish” than the one made with milk. I personally like the strata with sour cream instead of milk. The liquid base is usually milk and eggs, but I saw recipes that use sour cream and eggs instead. Strata is usually made with stale bread that is layered together with anything you have in the fridge. Just like my Cheesy Ham Hash Brown Egg Casserole, this dish is easy and hearty with minimum work involved. The next morning you just have to remove it from the fridge and bake it, which is a very unstressful way of having people over. You can put the strata together before you go to bed. This egg dish is perfect for feeding a house full of guests and if you want to prepare something simple and delicious that doesn’t require a lot of time in the kitchen. It is an American layered egg casserole dish, very easy to make, and highly suitable for a hearty breakfast or brunch. Meats like bacon, ham, salami, or other cold cuts and vegetables are also part of the dish. The basic ingredients are bread (lots of it), a custard made with eggs and milk, or eggs and cream and cheese. Remove it from the oven and let it cool at least 5 minutes before digging in-the only bad strata is a strata that burns the roof of your mouth.Strata is a savory breakfast or brunch casserole prepared the night before and baked the following day. Check often so you don't overcook it: you'll know it's set when the center doesn't jiggle when shaken. Open up the oven, uncover the strata, and continue baking until the cheese is melted on top and the egg custard is set, 15 to 30 minutes more depending on the depth of your strata. Bake your Strataīefore you bake it, cover your strata tightly with foil, and bake it for about 20 minutes at 350☏. If you're not going to bake it right away (and you crisped up your bread pieces in the oven), cover it with foil and store it in the fridge overnight, then let it sit on the counter at least half an hour before baking so it's not so chilled. Top it all off with your reserved cheese, and let the unbaked strata sit on the counter at least half an hour while you preheat your oven to 350☏. Press the bread down with your hands to make sure it's covered in liquid. Pour the milk and egg mixture over the top over the mix of bread, cheese, and add-ins. I'm also always into the combo of fried mushrooms, tomatoes, and bacon with fontina cheese, red chili flakes, and fresh thyme. Right now I love the combo of cheddar cheese, ham, and scallions with a good dose of dijon mustard in the liquid base. ![]() Or how about some sautéed cherry tomatoes and/or mushrooms? You're in charge. Fry up some sliced bacon or some sausage pieces, or cut up a ham steak. Only rule here is that unless it's a tender fresh thing like scallions or asparagus, the add-ins should be cooked and cooled completely before added to the strata. If you want your strata to have more going on in it than eggs and cheese (you might not), you can add up to equal parts add-ins as cheese. When you've picked and measured a cheese, toss it with the bread in the pan, leaving a handful behind to scatter on top before baking. You can also add some crumbled fresh goat or blue cheese or grated Parm or sliced Brie for flavor-just make sure to pair it with a mild meltable cheese like Monterey Jack or mozzarella for the best strata texture. Any meltable cheese will work here: Monterey Jack, mozzarella, cheddar, fontina or gruyère. So if you used two cups each of milk and eggs, use about two cups of shredded cheese. If you want a little less cheese (who are you?!) you can use a bit less. You need some cheese in there to get everything cheesy and delicious, right?
